Fort Edmonton's History

      Fort Edmonton was also known as the Edmonton house. Fort Edmonton was run by the Metis. The name of the fort today is Edmonton Park. Its existence was from 1795-1891. It was used for fur trading with the first nations the french had built this fort. The HBC was getting more competition against the NWC for fur trading.The HBC built Fort Edmonton by where the Sturgeon River meets the north Saskatchewan river and a "musket shot" away from Fort Augustus. The NWC had built Fort Augustus. William Tomison named Fort Edmonton.  Fort Edmonton in 1801 was moved more upstream to about the Rossdale Area of downtown Edmonton. In 1810 Fort Edmonton was moved yet agian. It was moved to White Earth Creek. Fort Edmonton and Fort Augustus Shared a palisade from then on.In 1813 the two forts moved back to the second site they were at. In the late 1820s Fort Edmonton was moved again to higher grounds due to flooding. That is were Fort Edmonton was rebuilt for the last time. So that is were it stayed. The Alberta Legislature Building now stands on the spot were Fort Edmonton was rebuilt for the last time.
